Japan seaside hotel 3 1/2 hours drive from Osaka Kansai airport. Azumi Setoda is a block from the Western edge of the Ikuchi island, in a meticulously converted house that belonged to a saltpan owner Horiuchi 140 years ago. It is a tribute to Japanese craftsmenship, I loved everything, even the little wooden hooks in the bathroom. Food is fresh & locally sourced and served on Horiuchi family’s tableware. Azumi is in a cute neighborhood with cute shops & cafes, temples & caves, the Ikuo Hirayama museum. Azumi is manned by a team that is used to dealing with international travelers, including the GM that used to work at Aman hotels, but Azumi and the shops next door, SOIL Setoda as well as Overview coffee are part of the town’s effort to revive the community that has been slowly hallowing out. The Azumi bathhouse, Yubune, is opened to the community, and guests from Azumi are given a map to encourage visits to the shops nearby.

Very well appointed ryokan in remote location. Staff super friendly and helpful. Room was spacious, immaculate and comfortable. We stayed 2 nights. Bathroom had wooden soaking tub which looked brand new. We had dinner on site one evening which was worthwhile, albeit a small fortune (approx $375 for 3 persons). Local restaurants were excellent as well and about 15% of the cost (advance reservations a must). Local art museum was a 10 minute walk from hotel and worth checking out. Bike rental was arranged by the hotel and nice to explore the island. Prior to our arrival, the staff was incredible with communication. We emailed them repeatedly in the months prior to arrival regarding our complicated travel schedule and they seamlessly helped arrange pickup from the train station, the bike rental, and a private car upon departure.

Our stay at the hotel was exceptional. We enjoyed every moment—from the staff, the ambiance, the room, and the place as a whole. A special mention goes to the dinner we had at the hotel, prepared by Chef Kenya Akita, who undoubtedly deserves three Michelin stars. Chef Akita, a Japanese culinary artist, trained for 13 years in France at a Michelin-starred restaurant before returning to Japan to adapt his extensive culinary expertise to the local cuisine. Every dish was outstanding, both in terms of flavors and aesthetic presentation. The meal was simply extraordinary. Don’t miss it!

We stayed at Azumi Setoda over Christmas and our stay is unforgettable. The service and ambience of Azumi Setoda are truly outstanding. Everyone is not only extremely professional but also genuinely warm and friendly. The attention to detail was impeccable. The dishes of chef Akita were amazing. The design blends modernity with traditional Japanese minimalism to perfection.

- very good staff - rooms are perfect (big fan of the big wooden bath tub) - really good Japanese breakfast - you can use the onsen across the street for free - we rented really good bikes that are also suitable for a longer tour Yes it is pricey, but if you have the means we definitely would recommend going. Definitely make sure to book a dinner spot.
